Verifying a grant of administration

The Queensland Courts document verification tool allows external parties, such as financial institutions, to confirm the authenticity of their clients’ court-issued grants of administration.

These grants comprise grants of probate, letters of administration (with or without a will), reseals and exemplifications.

This secure and efficient tool ensures you can verify these important legal documents quickly and with confidence.

How to verify a grant

Follow these steps to verify a court-issued grant of administration:

1. Obtain the required details

To use the verification tool, you’ll need the following information, which must be provided by your client:

  • File number: A unique identifier printed on the grant or letters of administration.
  • Access code: A secure code provided by email.

2. Log in to the portal

Log in to the Queensland Courts and Tribunals Online Services Portal.

If you’re a first-time user, you’ll need to set up a Digital ID.

3. Agree to the terms and conditions

Before proceeding, review the user agreement and accept the terms and conditions of use for the portal.

4. Enter the details

Navigate to the document verification section of the portal and enter the file number and access code provided by the court.

5. Retrieve the results

Once the number and code are entered, the system will confirm the authenticity of the grant or letters of administration.

You’ll also have the option to download it directly from the results screen.

What is a grant of administration?

A grant of administration is a specific type of court-issued document that authorises someone to manage the estate of a deceased person.

These documents are often required by financial institutions, government agencies, or other organisations to confirm the authority of the person managing the estate.

The three main types of grants are:

  • grant of probate
  • grant of letters of administration with the will
  • grant of letters of administration without a will (intestacy).
