Legal support services

There are a range of support and legal services in Queensland to assist individuals involved in the justice system, including victims, witnesses, and defendants.  

These services provide legal advice, representation options, and specialised support tailored to specific needs, such as family violence, self-representation, or navigating court processes.

ATSILS provides culturally appropriate legal services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Queensland.

LawRight Self Representation Service (title)

LawRight helps people who can’t afford private lawyers and don’t qualify for legal aid.

They offer free legal advice through volunteer lawyers to help you represent yourself. This service is for civil cases in the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court or District Court.

Important: Contact LawRight early. Appointments may take up to two weeks.

What they do

LawRight volunteers can help with:

  • advice on starting legal proceedings
  • guidance on court and tribunal processes
  • drafting documents like applications, affidavits, and submissions
  • preparing for court appearances
  • assistance to draft court and tribunal forms
  • advice on appeals and dispute resolution options.

What they don’t do

LawRight cannot:

  • take responsibility for missed deadlines
  • represent you in court or act as your lawyer
  • sign documents or communicate with the court for you
  • pay any legal fees or costs.

Legal Aid Queensland (LAQ) provides free legal advice over the phone and online. They also offer duty lawyer services in Magistrates Courts across south-east Queensland.

How to get help

If you are due to appear in a:

The Self-Represented Litigants Service (SRLS) helps people who are representing themselves in civil cases at the Brisbane Supreme Court or Brisbane District Court. The service provides general information on processes, not legal advice.

This service is free, private, and fair. It is available to everyone, no matter their race, gender, sexuality, or disability.
