The Queensland Drug and Alcohol Court (QDAC) helps adult offenders with severe substance use disorder linked to their offending behaviour. It provides treatment and supervision to reduce substance use and offending behaviour.
QDAC takes a therapeutic approach to justice. This means it focuses on helping offenders recover from drug or alcohol issues while addressing their criminal behaviour.
What QDAC aims to do
QDAC aims to:
- reduce an offender’s severe substance use disorder and future offending.
- improve community safety by helping offenders re-establish their life in the community.
To do this, the court features:
- regular court appearances to ensure participants stay on track
- regular and random drug testing
- incentives or sanctions to help participants engage with treatment.
Reviews and evaluation
QDAC was informed by recommendations in the 2016 Queensland Drug and Specialists Courts Review.
