Reporting to police

If your bail undertaking says you have to report to the police, then you have to go to the police station and report to the police. If you don’t, your bail can be cancelled, and you could be arrested and then fined or sent to prison for breaking the conditions of your bail.

Your bail undertaking might say that you need to report to the Officer in Charge of Police at a certain police station on set days and times.

It’s really important that you report to that police station if your bail undertaking says you have to. Your undertaking will tell you which police station to report to. It doesn’t count if you go to a different police station. Your undertaking will also tell you what days and what times you need to go there.

For example, your bail undertaking might say you need to go to the police station in Toowoomba every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 8am and 4pm.

When you go to the police station, you can tell the person at the front desk that you are there to report to police, because your bail undertaking says you have to do this. You might need to sign a register or attendance record book or have your photo taken, but the person at the front desk will tell you exactly what you need to do.

What does it mean that I have to report to the police?

You will need to talk to your boss and arrange to take a break to go to the police station. Work is not an excuse to not report at the police station. Or you can ask to change your conditions, so that you can report at a different time.

You can take your kids to the police station, or you will have to get someone to look after them while you go.

If your bail form says you have to go to a police station, then you have to go. If it’s really hard to get there you can ask to change your conditions, but you have to go until they have been changed.

If you have moved house and can’t get to the police station anymore, you can ask to change your conditions, so that you can report to a different police station instead, but you have to go until they have been changed.

You will be breaking the rules or conditions of your bail.  You can be arrested or have your bail cancelled and you might be charged with breaking your bail conditions.
