Murri Court

Magistrates Court - Criminal
The Murri Court sentences Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander offenders who plead guilty to an offence which falls within the jurisdiction of the Magistrates Court.

Murri Court provides a forum where Elders, Respected Persons, Community Justice Groups and the offender’s family can be involved in the sentencing process. However, it is the magistrate who makes the final decision and imposes the sentence.

Magistrates, service providers and Indigenous communities have worked together to establish Murri Courts in the Brisbane, Ipswich, Caboolture, Cleveland, Caloundra, Cherbourg, Rockhampton, Mount Isa and Townsville Magistrates and Childrens Courts.

Murri Court proceedings are less formal than those in conventional Magistrates or Childrens Courts. The magistrate, Elders and other participants may sit at a table close to the defendant, rather than on a raised bench. Participants are also not required to stand when addressing the court.
