Domestic and family violence

Magistrates Court - Criminal
Domestic violence can include verbal, psychological, sexual, social or financial abuse, or harassment or acts of violence that one person (respondent) in a domestic relationship uses against the other (aggrieved).

If someone commits any of the above acts on behalf of the respondent, this is also defined as domestic violence.

A domestic relationship exists between two people in a spousal, intimate, family, or informal care relationship.

Domestic violence affects people from all cultural and religious backgrounds, ages, levels of education and income.

A Domestic Violence Protection Order is a court order which aims to safeguard the aggrieved person, and if needed, family members and other associates who are also danger.

The protection order may set limits on the violent person’s behaviour and their access to certain places including the aggrieved partner’s home.
